West Ham United have set their sights on Getafe forward Chrisantus Uche as Graham Potter looks to bolster his squad.

After the Hammers were beaten 3-0 by Sunderland in their opening Premier League fixture on Saturday, 16 August, Potter is under increasing pressure at the London Stadium.

The former Chelsea boss steered West Ham to a poor 14th-place finish in the top flight last season and must turn things around swiftly.

Potter has been busy in the transfer market, acquiring players like Kyle Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson, while Football Insider have exclusively revealed that West Ham have eyed a move for Raheem Sterling.

Even though West Ham have signed Wilson on a free transfer, Potter is still keen to bring a new forward to the London Stadium.

Niclas Fullkrug scored just three goals for the Hammers last season, whereas Michail Antonio was released.

According to The Guardian on Thursday, 21 August: “A possible affordable option to play further forward is Getafe’s Christantus Uche.

The 22-year-old Nigerian can play as an attacking midfielder and up front.”

Football Insider verdict

Following Antonio’s exit, Uche could bring some much-needed firepower to Potter’s ranks, should he operate as a striker in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, West Ham are keen on Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes, showing that the East Londoners are also eager to bring an attacking midfielder to their ranks.

But Uche’s ability to play in both roles could make him an ideal asset for Potter amid otherwise troubling times for Potter at the London Stadium.

If the Hammers are beaten by cross-city rivals Chelsea on home soil on Friday, 22 August, the former Brighton boss will come under even more pressure after the humiliating defeat at Sunderland.

Contrastingly, a win over the Blues would boost Potter’s chances of enjoying a long-term future in East London.

Acquiring Uche, meanwhile, could also help ensure that West Ham better last season’s exploits.

Elsewhere, former football manager Martin Allen has weighed in on the Hammers’ performance at Sunderland in a West Ham Zone exclusive.
